What do you do when you have thousands of biodegradable sponges nearing their end of life?
You donβt send them to landfillβ¦ you create gardens with them! Weβre super proud to partner with Community Gardens Australia to launch the worldβs first Sponge Garden.

A garden made from dish sponges
You heard right! Our home compostable Dish Sponges were nearing the end of their life, so instead of sending them to landfill we worked with a regenerative designer to give them a new life as a garden bed.
Using Kohβs 100% biodegradable Dish Sponges (made from wood pulp) weβve designed a layered garden bed. The self watering design, reduces water usage and creates a happier home for your plants!
The sponges act as water retention, feeding your plant, until being composted over time, breaking down and turning into plant food.

Why did Koh create a Dish Sponge Garden Bed?
At Koh we believe in making better decisions for the environment as much as we possibly can, when we developed our Dish Sponges the fact they were fully compostable when youβre finished with them was a huge win.
Unfortunately what we didnβt know was that even when they havenβt been hydrated with water, they have a shelf life and can start to biodegrade.
Koh sponges have been given a new life through our work with a regenerative designer and horticulturist to create a wicking garden bed. The Koh sponges functioning to support plant growth through the creation of a water bank.
When using plants in the home or garden, having a water retentive material below the soil ensures the roots are getting access to moisture. A mix of free-draining soil allows the perfect mix of aeration and water retention. Creating a happier home for your plants.
